Introduction

Pork chops can be tricky to get just right. Oftentimes, they end up being overcooked and dry. My new favorite way to make pork chops is in my Instant Pot Duo Crisp or Cosori air fryer.

I love the fact that I can have dinner ready in just minutes by air frying the pork chops. The no breading recipe calls for a simple spice rub with spices that I always have on hand, and you probably do too.

A couple of easy side dish ideas include air fryer cauliflower, air fryer brussel sprouts or air fryer roasted potatoes – they both go wonderfully with the pork chops! Or try this peach mango salsa – it’s so refreshing and pairs well with the pork.

You may also want to check out my other air fryer recipes like frozen french fries, chicken wings, or sweet treats such as almond cake and pound cake.

Tips for Success

How to Prevent Sticking

I don’t usually encounter any sticking with this recipe but I do coat the air fryer basket (or metal rack if using an Instant Pot air fryer) with a bit of vegetable oil. I also coat the pork chops with a minimal amount of oil. I use about 2 teaspoons of oil.

To coat the air fryer basket, you can either spray the oil on or apply it using a paper towel. If using a spray, don’t use the canned oil spray, but instead use an oil spray mister that can be filled with oil. [Read More: Go to the section Air Fryer Tips in my guide on how to use the Instant Pot Duo Crisp]

It is also important to ensure that the pork chops are dried well before applying the oil and seasonings. I use paper towels to dry them thoroughly.

Using your hands to apply the oil and spices to the pork chops is the best way to get maximum coverage. Just be sure to wash your hands really well afterward!

Pork Chop Cuts

I use boneless pork chops that are about 1-inch thick. If you have thicker pork chops, you need to increase the air frying time by a couple of minutes.

If you’re using bone-in pork chops, air fry at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for the same amount of time.

If you have very thin-cut pork chops, reduce the temperature to 360 degrees Fahrenheit and cook them for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side.

Checking for Doneness

Check for doneness a couple of minutes before the cooking time is up. Measure the temperature in the thickest part of the meat.

Once the internal temperature is close to 145 degrees Fahrenheit, turn off the air fryer and immediately remove the pork chops and let them rest for 5 minutes.

Keep in mind that the pork will continue cooking after removal, so it’s very easy to overcook them.

I highly recommend investing in a digital thermometer.

Spices

The recipe gives you the seasonings I usually use when making pork chops. The spices are similar to a Cajun blend. But you can change things up. Add an extra ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper to make the pork chops spicier. Or you can omit the cayenne to make them mild.

Here are some other ideas for seasonings. Just watch out for the salt content. Each brand is different:

  • Lawry’s seasoned salt
  • Old Bay seasoning
  • Creole seasoning
  • Cajun seasoning
  • Barbeque rub

FAQS

Can I stack the pork chops when air frying them?

No, the pork chops need to be in a single layer and they shouldn’t be packed close to each other.

Can I use the Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid accessory to make this in a 6 quart Instant Pot?

You can use the same timing and temperature to make these Instant Pot air fryer pork chops using the air fryer lid.

Can I use another brand of air fryer?

Yes, the timing and temperature will work with other brands of air fryers such as a traditional air fryer or a Ninja Foodi.

What should I do if the pork chops stick to the bottom?

Use a nonstick spatula to gently move the pork chops. Sometimes letting meat cook for a few more minutes loosens it. You can also line the basket with parchment paper or aluminum foil to prevent sticking next time.

You can purchase parchment rounds with pre-cut holes but if you don’t have them, make sure you poke holes in parchment or foil to allow for circulation.

What should I do if the pork chops are overcooked?

It could be because the pork chops were thinner than 1 inch or your air fryer runs hotter. The next time you make them, check the internal temperature to see if it’s at 145 degrees Fahrenheit a few minutes before the time’s up and decrease the cooking time. Different air fryers may have slight variations, so you have to find a time and temperature that works for you.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer?

Yes. Though the Duo Crisp has a built-in preheat time, for this recipe I recommend preheating the air fryer before air frying. Preheat for 4 minutes before adding the pork.

Can I double this recipe?

Overcrowding the air fryer can result in soggy or undercooked food. It depends on the capacity of your air fryer. Some air fryers can accommodate more food.

You can do it in two batches if you need to air fry double the quantity.

I love cooking frozen tater tots with this easy air fryer recipe, and I think you will, too. I use Ore Ida brand, and using an air fryer gets you perfectly cooked tater tots every time.

You can use any brand, and they turn out best when cooked from frozen.

Deep fried tater tots can be tasty, but they are loaded with extra fat. Air frying tater tots gets them perfectly cooked.

The air fryer circulates hot air in a closed environment. This hot air cooks the tater tots so they are crispy on the outside and fluffy inside in a fraction of the time it would take in the oven!

Be sure to check out my guide to cooking times for air fryer recipes of all kinds. And check out the latest frozen foods I’ve tried cooking in the air fryer: Texas toast and chicken pot pie. These tater tots also go great with air fryer frozen burgers.

❤️ WHY YOU’LL LOVE TATER TOTS COOKED IN THE AIR FRYER

  • The tater tots are ready in 15 minutes.
  • They come out crispy on the outside and tender inside.
  • It’s an easy and delicious side dish for any main dish.
  • Tater tots are a kid-friendly snack but are loved by people of all ages.
  • The air fryer is the best way to cook the tots!

💡 Tips for the best frozen tater tots in the air fryer

How to get crispy tater tots

  • Preheat your air fryer to 400° F for best results.
  • Keep the tater tots frozen until you’re ready to air fry them in the preheated air fryer.
  • At a minimum, shake the basket halfway through cooking. I actually recommend that you flip them twice during cooking, at the 5-minute mark and 10-minute mark.
  • You don’t need to use oil in this recipe, but if you want the potato puffs to be extra crispy, use this tip: spritz the tater tots with a little oil. Use olive oil, avocado oil, or vegetable oil in a spray bottle. Don’t use canned cooking spray.

Recipe Variations

If you want to season the tater tots, toss the frozen tater tots with some oil and your favorite seasonings before air frying. Here are some options:

  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • chili powder
  • salt
  • pepper
  • cajun seasoning
  • taco seasoning
  • Old Bay seasoning

How much to cook at one time

How much you can make depends on the type of air fryer. If you have an air fryer that has multiple stacked racks, place the frozen tater tots in a single layer on each rack.

For basket-style air fryers, you don’t need to add the tater tots in a single layer. However, don’t overcrowd the basket because that will prevent hot air from freely circulating.

In my basket-style Cosori air fryer, I limit each batch to half bag of tater tots at a time (or tater rounds.)

If you need to make a larger quantity, do it in multiple batches. You can reheat the prior batches for 1-2 minutes cook time at 350° Fahrenheit if they cool down too much.

How long to cook tater tots

Cooking at 400° F for 12 minutes works perfectly for me. However, every air fryer will vary due to wattage, style, and capacity.

The first time you make potato tots in the air fryer, monitor and check on them 2 minutes before the cooking time is up to make sure they’re not overcooking.

Or you might find that you need to add a few extra minutes to the air frying time in order to get golden brown and extra crispy air fryer tater tots. Adjust the recipe as needed.

Storage and Reheating Tips

Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat tater tots for 2 minutes in the air fryer at 350° Fahrenheit.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the tots as a snack or appetizer with your favorite dipping sauce:

  • Ketchup
  • Sriracha mayo
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Fry sauce

These golden tater tots would make a great side dish instead of french fries for burgers or hot dogs.

❓FAQS

What brand of tater tots was used in this air fryer recipe?

I used Ore Ida tater tots. They are the most popular store-bought potato tots and are widely available. Trader Joe tater tots are another brand I use.

How to make Ore-Ida crispy crowns?

Ore Ida crispy crowns are very similar to OreIda tater tots, but they’re smaller and flatter. They can be cooked in the same way. You might need to add another minute or two to get them super crispy.

Can I air fry double the quantity?

If you need to air fry double the quantity, you can do it in two batches. The second batch of tater tots take less time to cook because the air fryer is hot.

How do you cook mini tater tots?

Mini tater tots don’t require as much time and can be cooked at a lower temperature. Air fry mini tater tots at 380° F for about 9 minutes. Check on them a few minutes early to ensure they don’t overcook.

Introduction

I make this almond cake at least as often as I do my pound cake. It’s one of my favorite desserts to make when I need to bring a dessert to a gathering. I always get requests for the recipe. You may also like my pear cake, or sour cream coffee cake recipe.

One of the best parts about this recipe is that it’s simple to make. It’s also hard to mess up. You’ll need to keep in mind that this almond cake is a dense cake. It’s crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside – kind of like a thick almond cookie.

If you’re looking for an airy and light cake, this may not be what you’re looking for. But if you try it, I have a feeling you’ll love it – especially if you like the flavor of almonds.

The only negative about making it in the air fryer is that the cake is pretty small. Because of the size limitations of my air fryer, I can only fit a 7 to 8-inch cake pan. If you want to make a larger quantity you may want to follow the oven directions in the recipe card, or this Swedish visiting cake recipe.

Tips and Substitutions

Butter

Use room temperature unsalted butter. I love Kerry Gold butter or Land O Lakes but you can use any brand.

Flour

My favorite brand of flour is King Arthur all-purpose flour.

Spoon the flour into the measuring cup and level off with a straight edge spatula or butter knife. Don’t scoop the flour directly from the container.

Temperature

This recipe was tested in the Instant Pot Duo Crisp and Cosori basket-style air fryers. If using the Instant Pot air fryer lid, bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. For a basket style air fryer, bake at 340 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cake Pan

I have a 7-inch Fat Daddio push pan which works in both the 6 quart and 8 quart Instant Pots. An 8-inch Fat Daddio push pan will work in the 8 quart. However, an 8-inch springform cake pan won’t fit in the 8 quart. A 7.5-inch springform pan will fit the 8 quart.

Mixer

I use my handheld mixer in this recipe but if you have a stand mixer, feel free to use it with the paddle attachment. You can also use a whisk to beat the batter.

Secrets to Success with Almond Cake

– Make sure the ingredients are at room temperature.
– Cream the butter and sugar till light and airy.
– Measure the flour by spooning it into the measuring cup.
– Don’t over mix the batter.

FAQS

Why is the cake wet in the middle and brown on the outside?

The temperature is probably too high. Lower the temperature and let it cook for 5 to 10 minutes longer.

Why is the cake dark brown on the outside?

Each air fryer is different. If you find that the cake is too brown on top, next time reduce the temperature to 340 degrees. You may need to increase the cooking time by 2 to 5 minutes.

Why is the cake undercooked?

The temperature may be too low or you may need to increase the baking time.

Can I store the cake at room temperature?

You can safely store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for three days (if it lasts that long!)

Equipment

  • Small Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Handheld Mixer
  • Silicone Spatula
  • Sifter
  • Cooling Rack
  • Cake Pan (7-inch)
  • Traditional Air Fryer or
  • Instant Pot Air Fryer

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup all purpose flour
  • pinch salt
  • 6 tablespoon butter unsalted (¾ stick), room temperature
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg room temperature
  • 1 ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoon sliced almonds

Instructions

  • Generously grease and flour a 7-inch cake pan.
  • In a small bowl, use a whisk to stir together flour and salt.
  • Use a handheld or stand mixer to beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and creamy.  Do not use high speed.  Periodically scrape the sides of the bowl using a silicone spatula.
  • Beat in the egg on medium speed until combined.
  • Beat in almond and vanilla extracts until just incorporated.
  • Add the flour and beat until combined. Don't overmix. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl periodically.
  • Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 350 degrees F.

  • Sprinkle sliced almonds evenly over the batter.

  • Once the time is up, test the cake for doneness with a toothpick. If the toothpick comes out wet or has crumbs on it, bake for another 3 to 5 minutes.

  • Turn the cake out onto a cake rack and allow it to cool completely.

To Make in the Oven, Follow Air Fryer Instructions Except:

Notes

  • Prep time does not include steps that are already accounted for in the ingredient list, e.g. room temperature eggs, softened butter, etc.
  • If baking in a basket-style air fryer (like Cosori), check on the cake at 22 minutes to make sure it’s not over-browning. If you find it’s too brown at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, the next time reduce the temperature to 340 degrees.
  • If baking the cake in the oven, follow instructions for the air fryer except you’ll double the ingredients, increase the cake pan size, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake for 55 minutes to 1 hour or until done.

Air Fryer Frozen Hash Brown Shredded

Blue plate with golden brown shredded hashbrowns, fried egg and sliced sausage.

Air Fryer frozen hash browns are an easy way to cook crispy hash browns that make an ordinary breakfast extra special. Make diner-style breakfast hashbrowns with very little effort by using your air fryer to make them extra-crispy. Using the air fryer is a quick, no-mess way to make hashbrowns.

Sometimes you just gotta go with the shortcut. When it comes to hashbrowns, I always go with the shortcut by using frozen hashbrowns. Why not have someone else do the shredding for me?!

Ever since I first got my air fryer, I’ve been trying out all kinds of recipes including heating up frozen foods. I prefer using the air fryer rather than the stove to make hash browns because the air fryer does such a great job of crisping up frozen prepared foods.

In addition to my recipe for air fryer bacon, you may want to check out other air fryer frozen foods including air fryer taquitos, french fries, potato skins, and pizza rolls.

If you’re looking for healthier fare, I also have a recipe for air fryer brussel sprouts cauliflower, and roasted potatoes.

Tips for Success

Preheat the air fryer if yours doesn’t have a built-in preheat functionality. Some air fryers preheat before starting to count down. e.g. the Instant Pot Duo Crisp. My Cosori has a preheat button that allows me to preheat the air fryer before putting in the food.

Keep the hashbrowns frozen until you’re ready to air fry them. Coat them with oil, salt, and pepper before air frying them. I find that doing this allows the hashbrowns to be seasoned perfectly and thoroughly.

If you find that the hashbrowns are frozen in one big block, you can coat just the surface with the oil and sprinkle the spices on surface before placing the block in the air fryer basket. Once they’ve thawed, stir them up to distribute the spices.

Don’t fill the air fryer basket too high because the potatoes may not cook through. You can air fry up to a whole 20 oz. bag of frozen hashbrowns, unless you have a very large-capacity air fryer. If you need to make a larger quantity, do it in multiple batches. You can reheat the prior batches for 1-2 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit if they cool down too much.

You need to oil the air fryer basket and the potatoes to prevent them from sticking. Spray the air fryer basket with spray oil. Don’t use the nonstick spray in a can. Instead, use an oil mister filled with olive or vegetable oil.

To get them even crispier, spray the hashbrowns with oil when you turn them halfway through.

Every air fryer will vary. The first time you make frozen hash browns in the air fryer, monitor and check on them 2 minutes before the cooking time is up. Adjust the recipe as needed in the future.

FAQS

How long should I cook the hashbrowns in the air fryer?

Cook them for about 14 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit, shaking them halfway through. Check on them about 12 minutes in, and take them out if you feel that they’re done.

What should I do if the hash browns are sticking to the basket?

You may not have added enough oil to the basket and the hash browns. Allow them to cook up a bit till they crisp on the bottom and they should come up a bit easier.

Do I have to season the hashbrowns before air frying them?

I find it best to season the hash browns before air frying because the flavors are absorbed better. I like using just salt and pepper but you could add some garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika too. Make sure your frozen hash browns aren’t pre-seasoned before you add salt.

Do I need to stir the shredded hash browns in the middle of cooking?

The hash browns will cook more evenly if you stir them up at the halfway mark. If you’re making a larger quantity, you can even stir them up a couple of times e.g. at 5 minutes and at 10 minutes.

Can I use the Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid accessory or Duo Crisp to make this recipe?

Yes, you can use the same timing and temperature to make these frozen hash browns using the Instant Pot air fryer lid, Duo Crisp or Pro Crisp.

What brand of frozen hashbrowns was used in this recipe?

I air fried Simply Potatoes shredded hash browns but there are many brands available. The other popular ones are Ore Ida and Alexia hash browns, which come in a seasoned variety.

What brand of air fryer was this recipe tested with?

This recipe was tested using Cosori and Duo Crisp brands of air fryer.

Can I reheat these air fryer hash browns?

Yes, they can be reheated by air frying them for 2 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Frozen Taquitos in Air Fryer

Whether for Taco Tuesday, Superbowl Sunday or a gathering of friends and family, appetizers are guaranteed to please. Some of my family’s favorites include nachos made with carnitas meat and chicken wings.

Sometimes I just don’t have the time to make appetizers from scratch. And that’s when I turn to frozen kid-favorites that can be cooked in the air fryer like TGI Friday’s potato skins, Totino’s pizza rolls, chicken nuggets, and these delimex taquitos.

Taquitos are corn tortillas rolled up with a filling of chicken, beef, or cheese and deep-fried to a golden brown. Frozen taquitos are already pre-cooked so they just have to be heated through.

I prefer using the air fryer rather than the oven to make taquitos because the air fryer does such a great job of crisping up frozen prepared foods. The other reason I like using the air fryer is the time savings. Foods cook much faster in the air fryer.

Tips for Success

Preheat the air fryer if yours doesn’t have a built-in preheat functionality. Some air fryers preheat before starting to count down. e.g. the Instant Pot Duo Crisp. My Cosori has a preheat button that lets me heat up the air fryer before putting the food in.

Keep the taquitos frozen until you’re ready to air fry them.

Don’t stack the frozen taquitos – lay them out in a single layer. I find that I can fit about a dozen in the Cosori air fryer basket, but it’s a bit of a squeeze. The more space there is between the taquitos, the crispier they get.

If you need to make a larger quantity, do it in multiple batches. You can reheat the prior batches for 1-2 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit if they cool down too much.

Serve the taquitos alone or with toppings such as

  • salsa
  • chopped fresh tomatoes
  • guacamole
  • sour cream
  • green onions
  • chopped fresh cilantro
  • pico de gallo
  • Sliced jalapenos
  • Cotija cheese

Every air fryer will vary. The first time you make taquitos in the air fryer, monitor and check on them 2 minutes before the cooking time is up. Adjust the recipe as needed in the future.

FAQS

Do I need to spray the air fryer basket or the taquitos with oil?

You shouldn’t need to use oil in this recipe. I haven’t had any issues with sticking.

How long should I cook the taquitos in the air fryer?

Cook them for about 8 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, shaking them halfway through.

Do I need to flip the taquitos in the middle of cooking?

I flip the taquitos if they are fairly tightly squeezed in the basket. If I’m making a smaller quantity, there is usually no need to flip them.

Can I use the Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid accessory or Duo Crisp to make this recipe?

Yes, you can use the same timing and temperature to make these taquitos using the Instant Pot air fryer lid, Duo Crisp or Pro Crisp.

What brand of frozen taquitos was used in this recipe?

I air fried Delimex taquitos but there are many brands available. The other popular ones are Jose Ole and El Monterey.

What brand of air fryer was this recipe tested with?

This recipe was tested using Cosori and Duo Crisp brands of air fryer.

Can I reheat these air fryer taquitos?

Yes, they can be reheated by air frying them for 2 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can I air fry double the quantity?

If you need to air fry double the quantity, you can do it in two batches. The second batch may take less time to cook because the air fryer is hot.

Pizza rolls are the perfect snack! When I was a kid, I remember eating Jeno’s pizza rolls. We loved those bite-size mini pizza snacks bursting with pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese.

If you remember Jeno’s and were wondering why you can’t find them anymore, it’s because it was sold to General Mills and was renamed Totino’s pizza rolls.

My fondness for pizza bites didn’t last into adulthood but when my kids were younger, I would make pizza rolls for Superbowl or New Year’s eve as a special treat. And I can’t lie – I may have taste-tested a pizza roll or two!

Since I got my air fryer, I’ve been making lots of easy air fryer recipes, from air fryer brussel sprouts, to thawed chicken wings, frozen chicken wings, and frozen french fries. I’ve even baked a delicious pound cake in the air fryer.

I’ve found that the air fryer is the best way to cook frozen foods because it gets them really crispy, like air fryer potato skins, taquitos, and chicken nuggets.

Making pizza rolls in an air fryer is an easy way to get crispy pizza rolls that get done fast when you want an easy snack.

Tips for Making Crispy Air Fryer Pizza Rolls

Preheat your air fryer for a couple of minutes before adding the pizza rolls and flip the pizza rolls or shake the basket halfway through the cook time in order to get them to cook evenly.

For best results, don’t thaw before air frying pizza rolls.

You don’t need to place the pizza rolls in a single layer in the air fryer. You can stack them but don’t overcrowd the basket, which would prevent the hot air from circulating. I like to limit each batch to half of a (50 count) bag of pizza rolls.

If you need to make a larger quantity, do it in multiple batches. You can reheat the prior batches for 1-2 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit if they cool down too much.

Serve the pizza rolls alone or with your favorite dipping sauce. Here are some suggestions on sauces to serve with pizza rolls:

  • Ranch dressing
  • Salsa
  • Marinara sauce
  • Sriracha sauce

Every air fryer will vary. The first time you make pizza rolls in the air fryer, monitor and check on them 2 minutes before the cooking time is up. Adjust the recipe as needed in the future.

If you’re making mini pizza rolls, decrease the cooking time by 1 to 2 minutes.

FAQS

Do I need to coat the air fryer basket with oil?

You shouldn’t need to use oil in this recipe. I haven’t had any issues with sticking. If you want to use a light coating of oil spray it can help make pizza rolls extra crispy.

How long to cook frozen pizza rolls?

The air fryer time is about 8 minutes. Cook the pizza rolls at 380 degrees Fahrenheit. Shake them halfway through.

What brand of frozen pizza rolls was used in this recipe?

I used Totino’s pizza rolls because they are the most widely available. You can find different kinds with your favorite pizza toppings like pepperoni, cheese, or sausage. There are different brands available including generic pizza rolls from the grocery store, Annie’s pizza poppers, or Michelina’s.

Why do the pizza rolls explode when they cook?

It’s kind of difficult to keep pizza rolls from expoding. Pizza rolls typically burst because steam builds up inside and the pressure causes them to explode and the pizza roll filling escapes. The best way to reduce the bursting is to take them out when they start bursting.

Check on them periodically during the cooking process after 6 minutes. I find that they taste just as good, if not better when they burst and the tomato sauce and cheese ooze out!

What if the pizza rolls aren’t crispy and golden brown?

If you find that the pizza rolls are undercooked, add an extra minute or two to the air frying time.

What can I do with leftover pizza rolls?

Store leftover pizza rolls in an airtight container. They can be reheated by air frying them for 2 to 3 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can I double the quantity?

How many pizza rolls you can fit in one batch will depend on the capacity of the basket of the air fryer. My Cosori air fryer has much more room than my Instant Pot Duo Crisp air fryer.

You can do it in two batches if you need to air fry double the quantity. The second batch may take less time to cook because the air fryer is hot.

If you ever need to make an appetizer but don’t feel like whipping one up at the last minute or don’t have the time, these potato skins may come to the rescue!

Yes, it’s always best to make food from scratch, but hey, we live in the real world and sometimes you need to have a few shortcuts in your back pocket. Air fryer potato skins are delicious crowd-pleasers. And the best part is the near-zero effort.

I like to heat frozen potato skins in the air fryer rather than the oven because I feel that they turn out better. If I’m making more than three batches, then I use the oven.

Tips for Success

Preheat the air fryer if the air fryer doesn’t have a built-in preheat functionality. Some air fryers preheat before starting to count down. e.g. the Instant Pot Duo Crisp and Cosori.

Don’t thaw the loaded potato skins before air frying them.

Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Place the potato skins in one layer. You might be able to fit 5 to 6 frozen potato skins at a time. If you need to make more, work in batches. You can reheat the prior batches for about a minute at 400 degrees if they cool down too much.

Some of the frozen potato skins can have the filling overflowing over the edges. If you want them to look more perfect, the best thing to do is open the air fryer after about 4 minutes and use a spoon to scoop up the falling parts and put them back into the hollowed-out potato skin. Be careful not to burn yourself! I like to use silicone tongs to lift the potato skins.

Serve the potato skins with any of the following toppings and garnishes:

  • Bacon bits *
  • Sour cream
  • Green onions
  • Chives
  • Parsley
  • Cilantro

* The potato skins I get are the TGI Friday’s potato skins with cheddar and bacon. If the brand you buy doesn’t have bacon, you can sprinkle some chopped cooked bacon after air frying.

Every air fryer will vary. The first time you make this recipe, monitor the potato skins and check on them 2 minutes before the cooking time is up. Adjust the recipe as needed.

FAQS

Do I need to coat the air fryer basket with oil?

You shouldn’t need to use oil in this recipe. I haven’t had any issues with sticking.

How long do you cook frozen potato skins?

Cook them for about 9 minutes at 360 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can I use the Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid accessory or Duo Crisp to make this recipe?

Yes, you can use the same timing and temperature to make these loaded potato skins using the Instant Pot air fryer lid, Duo Crisp or Pro Crisp.

What brand of frozen potato skins was used in this recipe?

I used TGI Friday’s potato skins. You don’t need to use TGIF – you can use Farm Rich or any other brand. You might need to adjust the cooking time. Just keep an eye on them while they’re cooking.

What brand of air fryer was this recipe tested with?

This recipe was tested using Cosori and Duo Crisp brands of air fryer.

What should I do if the potato skins aren’t crispy?

Air fry them for another 2 to 3 minutes.

Can I reheat these potatoes in the air fryer?

Yes, the potatoes can be reheated by air frying them for 2 to 3 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can I double the quantity?

If you need to air fry double the quantity, you can do it in two batches. The second batch may take less time to cook because the air fryer is hot.

Introduction

The Instant Pot is one of the most popular kitchen appliances that have come around in years. It seems like everyone has one. The Instant Pot Duo was one of the first models to be introduced and it’s also the most popular model. It was my first Instant Pot.

Until recently, Instant Pot cooking was limited to certain types of recipes, and crisping up or baking foods was out of the question. The introduction of the air fryer lid has been a game-changer.

You can make air fryer frozen french fries, chicken wings, roasted brussel sprouts, roasted potatoes, and even bake a pound cake with the air fryer lid.

You can purchase the air fryer lid as an accessory that can be used with certain models of Instant Pot. At this time, this accessory is only available for the 6-quart size of these models.

But you can also buy Instant Pots that come built-in with air fryer functionality. This article focuses on two models that come with an air fryer lid: the Duo Crisp and Pro Crisp.

Maybe you’ve finally decided to buy an Instant Pot or you just want to get a second one but are having trouble deciding between the Instant Pot Duo Crisp v Pro Crisp. Which model should you buy? Let’s compare the two in the sections below.

Be sure to check out my guides on which Instant Pot to buy, the Instant Pot sizes and how they compare, and the dimensions of various Instant Pot models and sizes.

I’ve also compared other Instant Pot models including the Instant Pot Pro vs Duo, Instant Pot Duo vs Duo Nova and the Instant Pot Duo vs Duo Plus.

Duo Crisp

Duo crisp parts - pressure cooker lid, air fryer lid, broil tray, air fryer basket, basket base, inner pot, base unit

The Instant Pot Duo Crisp is a pressure cooker and an air fryer. It was the first model to be introduced with the air fryer functionality built in. Refer to my comprehensive Duo Crisp user guide for details. Here are some highlights of this model:

Duo Crisp Features Summary

Sizes:

  • It comes in both 6 quart and 8 quart sizes.

Display Panel:

Pro crisp display panel black with a knob and duo crisp display panel silver with buttons only
  • The display panel has only buttons and no knob.
  • Temperature and cooking time can be adjusted with dedicated buttons.
  • To turn on the Instant Pot, press Start.

Inner Pot:

  • The stainless steel inner pot is the same as on the Instant Pot Duo, Ultra, and Duo Nova.
  • The inner pot doesn’t have any handles and the bottom is slightly raised in the middle, which allows the pressure sensors to detect when the Instant Pot is pressurized.

Pressure Cooker Lid:

Pro Crisp pressure cooker lid vs duo crisp pressure cooker lid
  • The pressure cooker lid on the Duo Crisp is similar to the Ultra and Duo Nova.
  • You release steam by pressing a button.
  • The lid also auto-seals i.e. you don’t need to turn the knob from Venting to Sealing position as with some older models of Instant Pot.

Air Fryer Lid:

  • The air fryer lid is slightly taller than the air fryer lid on the Instant Pot Pro Crisp, but it’s also slightly lighter.
  • The maximum air fry temperature is 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Accessories:

Accessories - air fryer protective pad and trivet
  • The Duo Crisp comes with an air fryer basket, a protective pad, and a trivet.

Pro Crisp

Duo crisp parts - pressure cooker lid, air fryer lid, broil tray, air fryer basket, basket base, inner pot, base unit

Like the Duo Crisp, the Pro Crisp is also a pressure cooker and air fryer. It has a few extra features that distinguish it from the Duo Crisp. I’ll compare the two models further below. Here are some highlights:

Pro Crisp Features Summary

Sizes:

  • It comes in the 8 quart size only.

Display Panel:

Pro crisp display panel black with a knob and duo crisp display panel silver with buttons only.
  • It has a sleek black profile and the display panel is very similar to the Instant Pot Pro and the now-discontinued Instant Pot Duo Evo Plus.
  • You use buttons and a knob to program the time and temperature.
  • The display panel has a status bar which tells you what stage of pressure cooking it’s in i.e. Preheating, Cooking or Keep Warm mode.
  • It also has icons that tell you whether it’s in pressure cooking mode or air fryer mode, whether sound is on and if the Delay Start feature is enabled.
  • To turn on the Instant Pot, you press Start.

Inner Pot:

Pro Crisp inner pot vs duo crisp inner pot.
  • The stainless steel inner pot is the same as on Instant Pot Pro.
  • The inner pot has silicone handles and the bottom is flat.
  • This inner pot cannot be used in other models of Instant Pot except those with handles, such as the Pro.

Pressure Cooker Lid:

Pro Crisp pressure cooker lid vs duo crisp pressure cooker lid.
  • The pressure cooker lid on the Pro Crisp is similar to the Instant Pot Pro lid.
  • You release steam by moving a switch.
  • The lid also auto-seals i.e. you don’t need to turn the knob to the Sealing position as with some older models of Instant Pot.
  • The steam release mechanism has a diffuser cover that allows the steam to be released in a gentler (and less scary!) way.
  • The lid has a space where you can place a QuickCool tray accessory filled with ice to quickly release pressure by cooling the Instant Pot faster after pressure cooking.

Air Fryer Lid:

  • The Pro Crisp air fryer lid is slightly heavier than the Duo Crisp lid.
  • The maximum air fry temperature is 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Accessories:

  • The Pro Crisp comes with an air fryer basket, a protective pad, and a trivet.

Smart Programs Comparison

Which Model is Better?

If you take price out of the equation, the Instant Pot Pro Crisp is definitely the better pick. But in the real world, price is always a consideration! If you can get a Pro Crisp at a price comparable to the Duo Crisp price, go for it!

Here are the reasons why you’d want to buy one model over the other:

PRO CRISP

  • You don’t care about cost or you can get it at a good sale price that’s similar to that of the Duo Crisp.
  • You’ll be pressure cooking more than air frying. The plus points of the Pro Crisp primarily apply to pressure cooking.
  • You already own a Duo Evo Plus or Pro model – you can use the inner pots interchangably.

CHECK PRICE

DUO CRISP

  • You don’t want to get an 8 quart due to the bulkiness and prefer the smaller size of the 6 quart, which the Pro Crisp does not currently carry.
  • You’ll be air frying more than pressure cooking. The plus points of the Pro Crisp primarily apply to pressure cooking.

Introduction

When Instant Brands first came out with the Instant Pot multi-cooker, there were a handful of models so you didn’t have a lot of choices. In the years since that initial introduction, they’ve put out many new models and sizes and discontinued a few.

You’re probably here because you’ve decided you want a new Instant Pot and are having trouble deciding on a size. There are so many models and sizes of Instant Pot that it’s perfectly understandable why you might be confused.

In this article, I’ll tell you about all the Instant Pot sizes and the differences between them. To help you decide on which model to get, please read my guide on which Instant Pot to buy.

What is an Instant Pot?

Instant Pot is a multi-cooker from Instant Brands. A multi-cooker is an appliance that has many functions including pressure cooker, rice cooker, slow cooker, yogurt maker, steamer, etc.

The functions that are offered in each model can vary. Some models have additional functions such as air fryer and/or sous vide. All these functions are also known as smart programs.

Also mistakenly referred to as Insta pot, Instant Pot has become so popular in recent years that the word Instant Pot is used as a generic name for pressure cookers of any brand.

Although the Instant Pot multicooker has many different functions, the most commonly used is the Pressure Cook function. Pressure cooking allows you to cook foods in a fraction of the time it would take in a pan or in an oven.

If you’re new to the Instant Pot and aren’t familiar with how to use it, here are my guides on how to use some popular Instant Pot models:

  • Instant Pot PRO CRISP Beginner’s Manual
  • Instant Pot PRO CRISP vs DUO CRISP

Instant Pot sizes

4 Instant pots - 3, 6, 8 and 10 quart

The Instant Pot comes in 4 different sizes: The 3 qt is the Instant Pot smallest size. The 6 qt is the most popular size, the 8 qt is the next size up and finally, the 10 qt is the Instant Pot largest size. The Instant Pot 5 qt model is no longer being manufactured.

The sizes that are available vary by model. For example, some models have a 10 quart available and some models only come in a 6 quart.

Some of the sizes (especially the 3 quart and 10 quart) don’t have all the features that the other sizes have. For example, the 10 quart doesn’t have the ability to prop the lid open. The 3 quart has fewer smart programs or functions than the larger sizes.

What sizes are available in each model?

Instant Brands is continuously introducing new models of the Instant Pot and discontinuing other models. I try to keep the information current but the information below is subject to change.

What size Instant Pot do I need?

Below you’ll find out the pros and cons of each size and for whom each size is best.

3 Quart (Mini)

Best for:

  • One or two people with minimum to no leftovers.
  • Limited kitchen space e.g. dorm rooms and RVs.
  • Traveling or vacationing and you don’t want leftovers.
  • If you find that you’re halving recipes regularly.
  • Use as a second Instant Pot for those who already own a 6 or 8 quart. Bonus: the inner pot fits in the 6 or 8 quart Instant Pot so you can use it for Pot-in-Pot cooking.

Pros:

  • Takes up much less room than the larger sizes.
  • Great for making side dishes when your larger Instant Pot is already being used for a main dish.
  • Portable and easy to lift.
  • Great for entertaining e.g. warming foods such as dips.
  • Good for making small quantities of food, such as yogurt or oatmeal.

Cons:

  • Can’t fit larger pieces of food in the mini, such as corn on the cob, ribs, whole chicken, cheesecakes or a roast.
  • Can’t use the air fryer lid accessory with this size.
  • Difficult to do pot in pot cooking (eg. lasagna, cheesecake) due to the size. Accessories that fit into the mini are harder to find.
  • Some buttons that are on the 6 and 8 quart may be missing from the 3 quart. But this is not that big a deal because you can just use the Pressure Cook button instead.
  • Can be just as expensive as a 6 quart.
  • Recipes may need to be adjusted.

Most recipes are written with the 6 quart in mind. A 3 quart might require modification of some recipes including the quantity of liquid and the pressure cooking time. Minimum liquid requirement: 1 cup

6 Quart

Best for:

  • Anyone who has enough counter space.
  • Families of 3 to 5 people – the 6 qt. is the most popular size of Instant Pot and is a good fit for most families.
  • Smaller families who like having leftovers and easy meals for the next day.
  • Those who entertain often.

Pros:

  • Takes up less room than the larger sizes.
  • Versatile size that meets most people’s needs.
  • The most popular size and most recipes are tested on 6 quarts, so you can usually follow a recipe without needing modifications.
  • You can use the air fryer lid accessory with this size.

Cons:

  • It takes up more room than the 3 quart.
  • You can’t fit very large food such as a 6 lb chicken, large roast or ham.

I own numerous 6 quarts and love this size. For my family of five, this size is large enough to cook a whole meal with some leftovers. It’s the size I recommend for most people provided they have the space to store it. I keep mine on my countertop. Minimum liquid requirement: 1 ½ cup

8 Quart

Best for:

  • Families or groups of 5 to 8 people.
  • Family of big eaters (aka growing teens!)
  • Those who entertain often.
  • Smaller families who like to have leftovers.
  • Meal prep and freezer meals.

Pros:

  • May not need to buy new accessories since the diameter may accommodate regular sized dishes (about 8 inches) that you already own.
  • Great for making bone broth.
  • Will easily fit a whole chicken, multiple slabs of ribs or a large roast.
  • Can easily cook two dishes at once using pot in pot method (PIP) eg. jasmine rice on the bottom and red curry on top.
  • Great for freezer meals such as a large pot of chili.
  • The larger capacity allows you to sous vide more food.

Cons:

  • As of now, you can’t use the air fryer lid accessory with this size (but you can purchase the Duo Crisp 8 quart which comes with an air fryer lid.)
  • I do find that cooking some foods in the 8 quart requires some modification of the recipe e.g. cooking rice using the pot in pot method.
  • This size is quite a bit bulkier and heavier than the 6 quart size. This is especially true with the models that have an air fryer lid.
  • The cord is not detachable as it is with many 3 quart and 6 quart models.

I own an 8 quart and I find it’s most useful when I want to double or triple a recipe. It also comes in handy when I’m cooking for guests or during the holidays. It easily fits larger food like a whole chicken or roast. If you’re debating between a 6 quart and 8 quart and you’re cooking for 5 or more, you may want to go with the 8 quart. Minimum liquid requirement: 2 cups

10 Quart

Best for:

  • Large families of 9 or more, entertaining large groups.
  • Batch cooking – great for large meal prep or freezer meals.
  • Large pieces of meat such as whole chicken.
  • If you’ll frequently cook using the Pot in Pot method. You’ll find this to be a great size because it accommodates larger pans.

Pros:

  • Has a very large capacity and accommodates a large whole chicken or a smaller turkey, large ham or roast, whole chicken or turkey, a full-size cheesecake, multiple racks of ribs.

Cons:

  • Very heavy!
  • Takes longer to come to pressure due to the increased capacity.
  • It’s only available with the Instant Pot Duo Nova model. The Duo Nova 10 quart model may be discontinued. No word yet on a replacement model.
  • The lid cannot be propped open like with the other sizes.
  • Spare parts aren’t easily available because it’s a rare size.
  • There aren’t any special accessories for this size Instant Pot, including trivets. You need to use 8 quart accessories.

Most Instant Pot recipes are written with the 6 quart in mind so you will need to tweak recipes for the 10 quart since it requires more liquid. Getting this size for everyday needs for a smaller family may be excessive. Minimum liquid requirement: 2 ½ cups

The Bottom Line

  • The 3 quart is right for you If you’re short on space and only cooking for 1 or 2 people or you want an extra Instant Pot.
  • The 6 quart is best if you’re cooking for 5 people or fewer or you want to be able to follow online recipes without having to modify them too much.
  • The 8 quart will work for you if you have a family of 6 to 8 people.
  • The 10 quart is for you if you are cooking for very large groups.
  • If you’re looking to do meal prep or freeze, buy one size up. You can always make a lesser quantity in a larger size Instant Pot but you can’t make more in a smaller capacity Instant Pot.

Instant Pot Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts

gray speckled bowl with roasted brussel sprouts cut in half

Instant Pot Air fryer brussel sprouts are my new favorite way to make brussel sprouts. They come out so crisp and cook much faster than in the oven. Even skeptics will be converted when they try this crispy brussels sprouts recipe. If you don’t have an Instant Pot air fryer or air fryer lid, you can use a traditional air fryer or bake them in the oven.

Introduction

I love my Duo Crisp air fryer and have been trying out lots of different recipes lately. My favorite things to make in my air fryer are roasted vegetables like these air fryer roasted potatoes and desserts like air fryer pound cake. Pound cake in the air fryer, you ask? You need to try the recipe – it’s one of my favorites!

I normally roast brussels sprouts in the oven but find the air fryer to be so much more convenient. The brussels sprouts come out much crispier and cook faster than when I make them in the oven. This recipe has Asian flavors that complement but don’t overwhelm the vegetables.

If you don’t have an Instant Pot air fryer or air fryer lid, you can use a traditional air fryer. The recipe works just as well. I’ve also provided instructions in the recipe card on how to make roasted brussels sprouts in the oven too.

How to prep the brussel sprouts

Cut off the stem of the brussel sprout first. If the brussel sprouts are large, I quarter them. If they’re medium-sized, I halve them and if they’re small, I leave them whole. This allows for even cooking. Try and buy similar-sized ones if possible. Find out more details about how to prep brussel sprouts.

Flavor variations

I make brussels sprouts with different seasonings. Sometimes I just add salt, pepper, and paprika if I have a main dish that is very flavorful. But these Asian brussels sprouts are my favorite.

If you feel that the spices aren’t enough or too overpowering, please adjust the quantity of the spices next time you make the recipe. I like things spicy and even add some extra sriracha sauce. You can also substitute sambal oelek, chili garlic sauce, or gochujang for the sriracha.

You can make the air fryer brussel sprouts with maple syrup instead of honey.

Another way to change up the recipe is to squeeze a little lime juice on the brussel sprouts after they’re done cooking. It gives the recipe an extra zing. I increase the quantity of honey if I plan on adding lime juice.

You can use pomegranate molasses or a balsamic glaze and omit the lime juice and honey. They’re two of my favorite ingredients when I roast veggies.

To make the air fryer brussel sprouts with bacon, precook the bacon and chop into small pieces. Add the bacon to the brussel sprouts before the last minute of air frying.

Tips to Prevent Sticking

I’ve found the best way to prevent food from sticking to the basket is to coat the basket with oil. I use a refillable sprayer (not the aerosol cooking spray cans which can ruin the coating on the basket) or I soak a paper towel with oil and coat the basket with oil.

Using my hands to apply the oil to the brussel sprouts is the best way to get maximum coverage. Just be sure to wash your hands really well afterwards!

FAQS

Do the brussel sprouts need to be in one layer?

No, you can stack them in the basket but make sure they are evenly spread out. Also, make sure you don’t overfill the basket so air can circulate.

How do I make the brussel sprouts more tender without burning them?

These brussel sprouts come out pretty tender with a slight chew, just the way I like them. But if you want them to be softer on the inside, you have a few options.

You can air fry them for an extra minute. You can also soak the brussels sprouts in cold water for 10 minutes before air frying. Make sure you drain them and dry them before adding the spices.

How do I avoid burnt brussel sprouts?

Since every air fryer model is different, be sure to check on them after about 12 minutes to make sure they’re not burning. Also, shake the basket partway through the cooking time. You can do this multiple times if you’re concerned about them burning.

Sometimes the loose leaves burn while the remaining pieces are cooked fine. To keep the brussel sprout leaves from burning, separate the loose leaves from the brussel sprouts at the beginning and add the loose leaves about 6 minutes into the air frying process.

Do I need to coat the air fryer basket with oil?

I’ve never had an issue with the brussels sprouts sticking to the basket. But just to be safe, I spray the basket with a light spritz of oil – you don’t need too much. Don’t use the canned oil spray, but instead use an oil spray mister that can be filled with oil. [Read More: Go to the section Air Fryer Tips in my guide on how to use the Instant Pot Duo Crisp]

Can frozen brussel sprouts be substituted for fresh?

Yes, you can use frozen but you’ll need to increase the cooking time by about 5 minutes. Although you can use frozen brussel sprouts, they’re not my favorite because I find that they end up less crispy and more cooked on the inside than fresh brussel sprouts. They’re still pretty good though, in a pinch.

Can I use the Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid accessory to make this in a 6 quart Instant Pot?

Yes, you can use the same timing and temperature to make these Instant Pot roasted brussel sprouts using the air fryer lid.

Can I use another brand of air fryer?

Yes, the timing and temperature should work with other brands of air fryers such as a traditional air fryer or a Ninja Foodi. You may need to add or subtract a minute or two. Keep an eye on the food.

Can brussels sprouts be reheated in the air fryer?

Yes, you can reheat the brussel sprouts in the air fryer at 350 degrees for 2 to 3 minutes.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer?

I don’t preheat the Instant Pot Duo Crisp + air fryer before roasting. Please note that the Duo Crisp has a built-in preheat time.

When I make two batches, I do notice that the second batch cooks faster since the air fryer is quite hot. It’s best to follow the instructions of the manufacturer.

Can I double this recipe?

Overcrowding the air fryer can result in soggy or undercooked food. It depends on the capacity of your air fryer. Some air fryers can accommodate more food.

If you need to air fry double the quantity, you can do it in two batches. Once both batches are done, combine the brussel sprouts and air fry them for about a minute to heat them all the way through.

Instant Pot Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts

These are the best air fryer brussel sprouts! They come out so crispy on the outside and tender with a pleasant bite on the inside and they cook in much less time than in the oven. They make a great side dish for dinner. If you don’t have an Instant Pot air fryer or air fryer lid, you can use a traditional air fryer or bake them in the oven.

Notes

  • * Pick brussel sprouts that are about the same size. If they’re different sizes, you might need to cut some of the larger ones into quarters, medium ones into halves and leave small ones whole.
  • Cooking time can vary based on the air fryer model and the size of the potato cubes. At the 12-minute mark, check the brussel sprouts to see if they’re done to your liking.
