Why I Love Making Dosa with a Crepe Maker
I visited a dear friend recently, and she told me that she makes dosas using a crepe maker. We ended up thawing her frozen dosa dough and making dosas with the crepe maker.
And I was hooked immediately! I returned home and immediately bought myself a crepe maker from Amazon.
I do love using my griddle because that’s what I’ve done for years, but the crepe maker is a way to make dosa quickly, and it’s especially helpful on busy weeknights.
And they always come out super crispy, just the way my family likes them.
Pros:
- Thin, crispy dosas that are perfectly cooked
- Consistent dosas every time
- It’s faster – perfect for weeknight meals
- No oil needed for the cooking surface
Cons:
- The dosas are much smaller than a traditional griddle
- If the batter is too thin, the dosas are too crispy
- The technique for dipping takes some getting used to
My verdict: I quite like it! It’s quick and convenient, perfect for weeknight dosa cravings.

🥣 Batter Consistency
The top tip when using a crepe maker is having the right batter consistency. It needs to be slightly thinner than when using a griddle or tawa.
The perfect batter consistency:
- Easily coats the crepe maker when dipped
- Flows smoothly without being too runny
- Slightly thinner than pancake batter
If your batter is too thick, add filtered water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach the right consistency.
If your batter is too thin, add a few tablespoons of rice flour or semolina to thicken slightly.
📝 Tips for Perfect Dosas
Batter:
- Use day-old fermented dosa batter for best results
- Stir before using
- Make sure you have enough batter to coat the entire cooking surface when dipping
Technique:
- Have your dipping bowl ready with enough batter, and add more when needed
- Dip the crepe maker into the batter and immediately tilt it around to cover the entire surface, working quickly
- Clean the crepe maker surface after every couple of dosas
Serving:
- Serve immediately while crispy
- These dosas are so good with red or green coconut chutney
- Keep them warm in a low-temperature oven if making for a crowd
🥞 How to Cook Dosas Using an Electric Crepe Maker
- About half an hour before making the dosas, remove the batter from the refrigerator.
- Add some water to thin it out if it’s too thick.
- Plug in the electric crepe maker to heat it for 3 minutes.
- If your crepe maker has temperature settings, use medium to medium-high.

- Pour some batter into the shallow dipping bowl that comes with the crepe maker. Dip the hot nonstick surface into the batter and move it around so it coats the surface.
- Turn the crepe maker so the nonstick surface is up, and the batter will cook on the surface. Lower the temperature or turn the heat off if the temperature is too high.
- When the bottom starts to brown, carefully peel away the dosa with a spatula. I like to use my hands, but be careful not to burn your fingers!
- Flip the dosa over and let it cook for about 5 to 10 seconds. Transfer the cooked dosa to a plate and keep warm. Repeat with the remaining batter.
